METIL has been awarded an MSIPP grant and is facilitating a program called Quickstart (QUantum Integrated Cyber Knowledge Simulation, Training, Advanced Research, and Technology). This program is focused on workforce development for the Department of Energy and providing opportunities for students to develop job skills that prepare them for careers in DoE. We are working closely with ORETTC as a partner to align our program with their mission. We successfully sponsored our inaugural Quickstart Winterim Internship over the 2024 winter break (summary below):
The Quickstart internship was facilitated by METIL at the Institute for Simulation & Training in support of the Department of Energy. This internship covered a variety of topics related to the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The topics covered in this internship include:
-
Introduction to Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) and Y-12 National Security Complex
-
Nuclear Security
-
Quantum Computing and Cybersecurity
-
Artificial Intelligence
-
Modeling and Simulation
Students received instruction and hands-on experience related to the work being done at Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology & Training Center (ORETCC) in nuclear security, training, and more. Projects covered included real-time game engine development (AR/VR/Holographic Table), virtual production, AI, and Quantum/Cybersecurity. Students spent time with ORETCC leadership, conducted research in the topic areas listed, and produced a short project that applied one or more of the topics researched. There were opportunities for both in-person and virtual participation. In-person activities allowed students to work and learn alongside the METIL technical team and hear from ORETTC leadership.
METIL is part of a winning team on a GSSP BOA, which includes multiple partners (UCF is one of only four universities). This work continues our efforts to support the DOE and ORETTC’s training missions through simulation, training, and digital twins.
